Succesful Spa 400 weekend for JJ Motorsport drivers

April 18, 2018

After a long winterstop, we kicked of the year with several trackdays and also with a DNRT race for our newest addition to the team: Pieter Denys. Pieter started with us only half a year ago and scored really well during his first testcase at Zandvoort. Last weekend our drivers were up for a weekend full of endurance racing, with Sari/Sari driving the NES 500 4h race with the BMW M4 GT4 and the Spa 400 race with the BMW M235i Racing Cup. Guido and Tom Werckx on their side did the Spa 400 race (6h40) with the BMW Clubsport Trophy car, just as Pieter Denys and Gregory Eyckmans - the latter who just made his GT4 European Series debut a week ago at Zolder where other (former) JJ Motorsport drivers as Maciej Dreszer, Stéphane Cox, Jamie Vandenbalck and Hendrik Still were also competing.

Hakan and Recep Sari made use of the opportunity to test the BMW M4 GT4 on thursday with help from GT4 champion Ricardo van der Ende. This training paid off during the qualifying and race. Recep qualified the car on the front row, and only had to let an ex Le Mans Porsche 996 RSR (which participated in the race in 2006) go in front. After the one hour mark, we were even leading the race in front of another M4 of Munckhof and a few other GT4 cars. We eventually finished the race fourth, with Recep lapping the second best time of the race with a 2.35.382!

Further on saturday, we had the qualifying for the 6h40 long Spa 400 race. In a field with a wide variety of cars, Hakan and Recep put the M235i Racing Cup on P17 for the race on sunday. Best of the BMW Clubsport Trophy cars was the Xwift car of Pieter and Gregory with a 2.57.481 on P22 in general. Guido and Tom qualified the EL Systems car as 4th best 325i Clubsport.

During the race on sunday, we saw some nice battles between the M235i of Sari/Sari and the one of Buffet Racing Team. It was an exciting battle untill the end, with our BMW M235i finishing on P12 in general. Only a few places behind them in the general ranking, Gregory and Pieter finished the race as 1st BMW Clubsport Trophy, which was good enough for a P2 in class against a much faster Porsche Boxster and P3 in Division 1.

For Pieter Denys it was his first real big race, and even after 2 drive through penalties and a stop&go of 1 minute the two give it their all and managed to hold of the Van Der Horst Clubsport. Pieter his best lap was a 2.57.9 in race conditions, a result on which he can be very proud. The only BMW Clubsport driver being quicker was his coach, and all that after 6 months of intense training together.

Guido and Tom were third best BMW Clubsport at the finish and ended up just outside the podium in their class. The two also delivered a very strong performance, with Tom improving his best laptime to a 3.01 in only his second season of racing! We can thus look back on a really succesfull weekend where all our drivers managed to improve and score nice results, without any technical issues!
